What the heck, this is so cool!

I know! This tool handles everything - movie metadata, studio logos, ratings, runtime, and cast information - all formatted to look like an authentic VHS label from the 90s. Want to see what Mad Max Fury Road would look like as a VHS rental? Now you can.

The tool generates both main face labels and spine labels, designed to match standard VHS dimensions. It automatically pulls studio logos, ratings, cast information, and other metadata directly from TMDB.

Why make your own VHS Labels and Tapes?

I was recently gifted a VHS/TV Combo. It wasn't long before I started making my own custom VHS tapes. I've been playing with building calculators, designers, and other generators, and wanted to see if I could make a VHS label generator, something that would automate the process of pulling the logo, runtime, directors, and top cast. I couldn't find one, so I built it!

FAQs

Can I use my own artwork for VHS labels and covers?â–¾
Yes, you can search for a movie title and click "Create a custom design" instead of the title. This method is great for stuff that isn't on TMDB like YouTube shows and other projects where you need a unique design. However, my preferred way is to upload assets to TMDB. Right below your design, there's a link that says "Missing a logo or poster?" which takes you directly to that movie's TMDB page. Anything you upload will usually appear in a few hours. This route is great because it adds to the community and pulls in extra metadata for your labels and sleeves.
Does the VHS designer work on mobile or tablet?â–¾
You can design labels on mobile, but you'll need to use a computer for copy, download, and printing. You can test out designs on your phone, and then hit the 'share' button to send it over to yourself for printing later.
Will the VHS designer work on all browsers?â–¾
Safari has had some issues with layout. For the best experience, I recommend using the latest version of Chrome or Firefox, but we are working to improve compatibility with all browsers.
How do I make VHS labels and sleeves?â–¾
This VHS Label Maker and Slipcover Designer let you create both labels and full VHS sleeves. You can adjust colors, logos, and metadata to make authentic custom covers and VHS tapes.
What about clamshell & VHS polybox cases?â–¾
Yes, polybox cases, also known as library cases or rental boxes — are now supported. I'm still working on the design templates for the VHS Softbox clamshells, like the old disney cases.
How do I avoid print scaling issues?â–¾
Print at 100%. Turn off "Scale to Fit" or "Fit to Page." Use system dialogs if your browser hides advanced print settings. The tool scales artwork to 600 dpi for sharp printing
Lol why a VHS tool?â–¾
I really love the VHS format, the feeling, the sound, the object. People are using this tool to replace missing labels, make backups when tapes get eaten, create customs, and just enjoying the VHS aesthetics on a shelf. Maybe you lost the slipcover or the original tape, or maybe you're creating a design and need a place to start. We're here for all of it.
Can I make cassette tape labels too?â–¾
Glad you asked. A cassette tape label generator is in the works. Become a member below and you'll get early access to the beta soon.
Can I donate money?â–¾
Yes, you can support the development of this VHS tool (and more tools in the future) by clicking the "Become a Member" link below.
